Wedding Photography, Southern Style
Did you know that depending on the region you live in, styles can vary? Of course there are always exceptions to that, but as a whole we are influenced by our surroundings. The styles that influence everything from the clothing we wear to the photography we choose have roots in our culture. If you are very eclectic in your style, you are more likely to choose a photographer to photograph your wedding that has a style that reflects eclectic. Perhaps your style is very contemporary; you may want a wedding photographer that reflects that in his or her style. You may find that your style is very classic, so you may like a portfolio that reflects simple elegance. Even if you do not feel like you have a style that can be described, you need to look at a lot of different kinds of portfolios the see what you like and what you do not like.
In addition to style, you need a personality that you can feel comfortable working with. Your wedding day is one of the most important days in your life and the last thing you want to do is spend that day with someone you feel uncomfortable around. As an Atlanta wedding photographer, I find that in the South, we not only like sweet tea but we like images that reflect southern elegance and style. In every image I create, I look for color and texture and great light as well as things that reflect my personal style. For instance, take a look at the image below.
This image is an example of something that some Atlanta wedding photographers would do. This is an image of a beautiful bride for a local bridal publication showcasing an Anne Barge dress. I went to a very typical landmark in Atlanta, Georgia. The background is the iconic Varsity Restaurant in downtown Atlanta. I shot it from a low angle to accentuate the skyscraper in the background while still getting the activity on the street. I love the texture of the building as well the vibrant color and beautiful light. One of the interesting things about this image is that nearly every bride that has come into my studio loves this image. It’s always great to create an image that reaches a very high “likability” among many people.
So when you are looking for a wedding photographer, keep in mind that you not only want to think about their style, but also your own in selecting someone. Look for a style you like and a personality you are comfortable with.
